Rose Wins MVP Trophy

The United Center crowd’s M-V-P chant resonated like never before Wednesday night when NBA commissioner David Stern presented Bulls guard Derrick Rose with the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the league’s most valuable player before Game 2.

‘‘This right here is for the city of Chicago more than anything,’’ Rose said at the center-court ceremony. ‘‘Thanks. I appreciate it. My family appreciates it. And the organization appreciates it. Thank you all, and we love you all.’’

Stern saluted Rose — at 22 the youngest of all MVP trophies winners in NBA history — in a pre-game news conference, saying he ‘‘couldn’t be better’’ as a role model for the NBA.
‘‘He’s the full package,’’ Stern said. ‘‘He had a family that watched out for him. He made through difficult times. He’s very valuable, not just to the league, but to his teammates and as a role model to all.’’

For what it’s worth, the Bulls were 4-0 in the playoffs when Michael Jordan received his MVP trophies from the commissioner — with Jordan averaging 36 points in Eastern Conference finals victories over the Pistons (1991), Cavaliers (1992), Magic (1996) and Pacers (1998).
